Malaysia will head a regional delegation to Myanmar to push for peace and humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Bangladesh’s visiting interim head Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.
Bangladesh shelters more than 1 million Rohingya refugees in camps in its southeastern district of Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee settlement, and Bhasan Char off the coast of Bangladesh.
Malaysia’s foreign minister will coordinate the Myanmar mission, set for the coming weeks, along with counterparts from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, according to Anwar. The UN said around 150,000 Rohingya fled western Myanmar Rakhine State to Bangladesh in the past 18 months alone due to armed conflicts and targeted violence.
