Arakan Army (AA) Commander-in-Chief Major General Tun Myat Naing reportedly said in an interview with a news outlet that due to the ongoing military crisis in Rakhine State, it is not possible to prioritize the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

He claimed that the people of Rakhine State, along with the entire population of Myanmar, are suffering from war, hardship, famine, and shortages, and therefore Rohingya repatriation cannot be addressed at present.

Moreover, his remarks raised doubts about the Rohingya’s sense of loyalty, law-abiding spirit, and capacity to work together for peace in Rakhine and Myanmar. These questions about the Rohingya’s patriotism and national loyalty have cast further doubt on their dream of returning home, according to many Rohingya.

The Bangladeshi government’s announcement that refugees would be sent back next year was criticized by the AA leader as merely an attempt to attract international assistance, while at the same time allegedly arming certain groups and destabilizing the border.

Observers say the AA leader’s reasoning is not based on solid grounds but rather reflects his personal motives, showing indifference and lack of compassion for the future of the Rohingya. As a result, Rohingya communities and international actors alike are opposing and criticizing his stance.
