19 Rohingya prisoners who were allegedly conscripted by force into the military and later imprisoned on accusations of having links with the Myanmar junta have been transferred from Buthidaung Prison to Laimyo Prison. wsnews24 confirmed the transfer after speaking with local representatives and families of the detained Rohingya.
It was reportedly planned that these Rohingya detainees would be released by the Arakan Army (AA) as part of a gesture to mark the 47th birthday of the AA’s Commander-in-Chief. Members of the Rohingya community had also been eagerly awaiting their release as a goodwill act to commemorate the occasion.
However, as of now, the planned release has not taken place, and the prisoners remain detained in Laimyo Prison, according to local reports. The AA has not issued any official statement specifying the exact date or time for their release.
Family members of the prisoners said that all necessary procedures for the release had already been completed, but the sudden postponement of the release after prior assurances has caused deep disappointment. Locals said the delay has undermined trust-building efforts between the Rohingya and Rakhine communities.
