UN Human Rights Envoy Condemns the Military’s Horrific Atrocities

International Myanmar World

Myanmar’s military has committed brutal atrocities, including burning people alive inside their homes—not only ordinary civilians but also persons with disabilities—according to a statement by UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Tom Andrews.

Tom Andrews noted that global news outlets have largely focused on battles and other developments in Myanmar, while neglecting the fact that persons with disabilities are being left unprotected and subjected to torture and abuse. He warned that daily acts of violence are increasing risks for the entire population.

Because rescue teams and human rights organizations are unable to access many areas, conditions continue to worsen due to arson attacks and other violent acts. International organizations are also facing significant obstacles in obtaining on-the-ground information, the UN envoy stated.

Andrews stressed the urgent need for relevant organizations to quickly document the military’s crimes. Violent abuses against persons with disabilities represent a profound tragedy for the global human community, he added.

Calling attention to the escalating atrocities in Myanmar, Andrews urged the international community to stay vigilant and provide assistance. He emphasized the necessity of rapid action against human rights violations and crimes against humanity.
