Intense fighting has erupted in Padaung Township, Bago Region, as Myanmar’s military regime launches a renewed offensive to retake the strategically Point 666 hilltop base, currently under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), according to military sources.

Troop Advance from Sinlan Village

The junta is reportedly advancing troops from Sinlan Village in an effort to regain control of the hilltop base located within the Otshitpin military station.

Sources said the regime is simultaneously reinforcing its defenses around No. 16 Weapons Factory (KAPASA-16) to counter the Arakan Army’s continued advance toward the facility.

“The offensive is mainly being carried out by a column based in Sinlan Village,” a military source said. “On the ground, their troops have suffered significant casualties and were forced to retreat in disarray due to interceptions. Clashes are ongoing near KAPASA-16. The junta is providing heavy artillery support from inside the factory while its infantry advances, making the situation extremely intense.”

Breaches Near KAPASA-16

AA and allied forces have reportedly breached defensive positions around Point 503 and Point 206, located approximately five kilometers from KAPASA-16.

The strategic Point 666 hilltop base was first captured by the Arakan Army and its allies in October 2025. Although the junta briefly retook it during a counter-offensive, revolutionary forces recaptured the base following intensified clashes on January 28 this year.

Production Cut to Strengthen Defenses

As AA forces close in on KAPASA-16, the regime has reportedly reduced gunpowder production at the factory to focus on strengthening its defensive perimeter.

Captain Zin Yaw, a participant in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), said:

“After the capture of Point 666 hilltop base, only about three outposts remain between the Arakan Army and KAPASA-16. If the factory cannot provide adequate support, these outposts could fall soon. The junta will defend KAPASA factories at all costs. While other battalions can withdraw, they cannot abandon weapons factories because the machinery and technology are immovable. They have to mount a last-stand defence, which is why they are cutting production to prioritize fortifications.”

Strategic Importance of KAPASA-16

Military analysts describe KAPASA-16 as a key gunpowder factory that plays a vital role in the regime’s nationwide weapons production. The Otshitpin military station in Padaung Township hosts several major defense industries, including weapons factories numbered 3, 5, 6, 9, and 16.

The Arakan Army and allied forces began expanding operations into Bago Region in January 2025. To date, they have captured at least five junta bases, including Nyaunggyoe, Mothi, Bagankwal, and the strategic Point 666 hilltop base.

Fighting remains ongoing, with both sides sustaining heavy engagement around the strategically significant military-industrial zone.
