A Myanmar military jet fighter carried out an airstrike on the Chaung Tu detention centre and the surrounding area of Mt. Kansauk in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State, at about 9 p.m. on February 17.

Information regarding casualties and damage was not immediately available at the time of reporting. Local residents said the late-night bombing caused fear among the community.

The military regime previously bombed the same detention centre on January 20. That airstrike killed 21 people, including prisoners of war (POWs) and their family members, and injured about 30 others.

The junta has stepped up air attacks in the region in recent weeks. On February 12, airstrikes on Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U towns killed seven civilians, including an infant, and injured 16 others.

The military regularly conducts airstrikes on towns and villages controlled by the Arakan Army (AA) across Arakan State, resulting in increasing civilian casualties and displacement.
