Myanmar

Amid ongoing solar-sector cooperation between the Myanmar regime and China, a launch ceremony for the Mekong-Lancang (2025) Solar Technology Standardization and Solar Capacity Testing Center Establishment Project was held in Naypyitaw on Wednesday, according to military-run Myawaddy media.

The event was attended by Dr. Aung Zeya, the junta’s deputy minister for science and technology, Dr. Zheng Zhihong, minister counselor at the Chinese Embassy, and other officials.

The project is a follow-up initiative to the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2022) Solar Project. It aims to establish technical standards for Myanmar’s solar industry, set up a solar energy testing center, enhance the technical capacity of solar stakeholders and support national solar energy projects. It is also expected to produce outcomes that could be effectively applied to solar projects in other countries within the Mekong region, according to officials.

Myanmar has been experiencing severe electricity shortages under the junta, which has been seeking to expand the use of solar systems with assistance from China.
