Regime chief Min Aung Hlaing in a ceremony on Sunday honored members of his junta for “loyal service” throughout the five years since his coup ousted Myanmar’s democratically elected government.

Honorees from the outgoing junta included Deputy Commander‑in‑Chief Soe Win, new military chief Ye Win Oo, former top commanders Nyo Saw, Aung Lin Dwe, Mya Tun Oo, and Legal Affairs Minister Thida Oo.

Min Aung Hlaing, who has just been elected president by the military-controlled Parliament, said some junta members had been removed for negligence, misconduct, and procedural failures, but those present had “faithfully and competently” carried out their duties.

The regime has presided over one of the most disastrous periods in Myanmar’s modern history, killing, injuring, imprisoning and displacing millions and running the economy into the ground.

Instead, Min Aung Hlaing portrayed the junta as overcoming multiple crises, beginning with COVID‑19 and followed by what he described as nationwide “terrorism,” for which he blamed ethnic armed groups.
