A day ahead of what is rumored to be junta chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s final Armed Forces Day as the military’s top commander, a high-profile rehearsal has fueled speculation of an impending leadership transition.
On Wednesday, General Ye Win Oo, the newly promoted army chief and frontrunner to become the new Commander-in-Chief, inspected a full-dress rehearsal for tomorrow’s 81st Armed Forces Day parade alongside deputy junta chief Vice Senior General Soe Win.
Other generals present included Chief of General Staff (Army, Navy, and Air) General Kyaw Swar Lin, Defense Minister General Maung Maung Aye, Home Affairs Minister Lt. Gen. Phone Myat, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Htein Win, and Commander-in-Chief (Air) General Tun Aung.
Reports indicate that coup leader Min Aung Hlaing intends to assume the presidency next month in a new pseudo-civilian government, handing the post of military chief to his trusted confidant Gen. Ye Win Oo after 15 years in the role.
