Regional partnerships help offset Western sanctions: Myanmar junta minister

Amid Western sanctions, the new junta Minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, U Aung Kyaw Ho, attended the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) talks in Suzhou, China on May 22.

During the event, he stated that regional cooperation within multilateral trading systems has boosted Myanmar’s trade opportunities and economic resilience despite sanctions from some countries.

While Myanmar is a member of the RCEP—which includes China, Japan, South Korea and ASEAN—it is not part of the CPTPP. Backed by China on the international stage, the regime is actively trying to expand its global trade networks.
