Govt set to recognise Rohingya teenager Noor Mustafa as ‘July Martyr’

The interim government is set to issue an official gazette declaring Noor Mustafa, a Rohingya teenager and a madrasa student, as a “July Martyr” for sacrificing his life during the anti-fascist uprising last year.Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam first tabled the proposal seeking recognition for Noor Mustafa in an advisory council meeting on 22 June, he said in a facebook post on Wednesday afternoon.

The July Mass Uprising Directorate is working to ensure the recognition, and a notification will be issued soon, Mahfuj added in his facebook post.

Later, the post was shared by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

In the morning of 5 August last year, 17-year-old Noor Mustafa took part in a demonstration against the then Awami League fascist government in front of the Eidgaon police station in Cox’s Bazar. At noon, he sustained bullet injuries when pro-fascist forces opened fire on the demonstrators.He died from the injuries the next day while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

In 1993, Shafiul Alam the father of Noor Mustafa, entered Bangladesh from Myanmar and set up permanent residence in the Eidgaon area of Cox’s Bazar. Noor Mustafa was born in Bangladesh. At the time of his death, he was a tenth-grader student at the local Darus Salam Dakhil Madrasa.
