Arakan Army Forcing Rohingya to Flee from Maungdaw Township.

International Myanmar World

In the northern part of Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, most of the Rohingya residents from Kyauk Kaung Taung village tract have fled to Bangladesh due to forced expulsions and heavy pressure from the Arakan Army (AA), according to local sources.

Locals said that AA accused the Rohingya after a Rakhine villager from Kanpyin went missing around March last year while going to sell cattle. Using this as a pretext, AA carried out arbitrary arrests, torture, and coercion to drive the Rohingya from their homes.

As a result of AA’s pressure, most Rohingya from Kyauk Kaung Taung village tract fled across the border into Bangladesh to escape threats to their lives. Locals added that the AA has given the eight remaining Rohingya families in the village until September 30 to leave completely.

Forcibly evicting innocent Rohingya civilians at gunpoint is a grave violation of human rights, and rights observers warn that such actions could bring international accountability upon the AA.
