Rohingya School Teacher Killed by Arakan Army in Buthidaung Township

International Myanmar World

The Arakan Army (AA) has once again carried out violence against the Rohingya community in Rakhine State’s Buthidaung Township. On 3 October, armed AA members shot dead a Rohingya school teacher in broad daylight at Pauk Taw Pyin village in the Nga Yant Chaung area.

According to local sources cited by wsnews24.com, around 10–12 AA fighters entered the village and indiscriminately shot the teacher dead before quickly withdrawing.

The Arakan Army claimed that the victim had been providing ARSA/RSO members with information regarding AA positions, movements, and activities. However, local Rohingya residents have rejected this accusation as false, fabricated, and politically motivated.

This killing constitutes a clear violation of international human rights and humanitarian law. Under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the right to life and liberty must be protected. Similarly, the Geneva Conventions define attacks on civilians as war crimes.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have previously warned that the Arakan Army is responsible for abuses, enforced disappearances, and sexual violence against Rohingya civilians in Rakhine State.

According to human rights organizations, the AA has long been implicated in serious crimes against the Rohingya, including arbitrary killings, enforced disappearances, sexual violence against women and children, forced labor, and unlawful taxation.

Analysts note that this killing once again demonstrates that Rohingyas face double persecution—at the hands of both the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army.

The 3 October killing underscores that the Arakan Army’s policy of repression and violence against the Rohingya remains ongoing. The incident serves as yet another reminder to the international community that the lives of Rohingya civilians in Rakhine continue to be in grave danger.
