– Many Injured and All Taken into Custody in Sittwe

The Myanmar Navy opened fire on a motorized boat carrying around 400 Rohingya who had departed Bangladesh by sea en route to Malaysia. The incident occurred on November 21, after which the boat was stopped and all passengers were detained and taken to Sittwe, according to local reports. More than ten people were injured due to the shooting.

The Rohingya had left Bangladesh’s Teknaf area on a large motorboat heading toward Malaysia. After about 24 hours at sea, Myanmar naval vessels opened fire on them within Myanmar’s territorial waters, and subsequently detained them and transported them to Sittwe. Those who were injured—more than ten—are reportedly receiving medical treatment at Sittwe General Hospital under the supervision of the military council.

According to a Rohingya community member, Rohingya lives have become filled with hardship, and in their search for better opportunities, many are losing their lives on the journey, falling victim to human trafficking, or suffering extreme forms of abuse. As a result, entire communities are slowly fading away.
