In an interview with Russian media Red Star, Moscow’s ambassador to Myanmar Iskander Azizov underscored that “military‑technical cooperation with Myanmar is the central part of bilateral ties, and is long‑term and multifaceted in nature.”

Azizov said Russia has supplied Myanmar with air defense systems and aircraft, and set up a regional‑level service center for their maintenance. Naval cooperation has grown since a 2018 agreement simplifying port calls, with Russian Pacific Fleet vessels making regular goodwill visits to Yangon’s Thilawa Port. For three consecutive years, the two navies have conducted joint “MARUMEX” exercises. Myanmar officers and cadets are also being trained at Russian universities in military and scientific disciplines.

Azizov also highlighted Russian plans to build a small modular nuclear power plant to offset Myanmar’s 50-percent electricity deficit, and Moscow’s involvement in the Dawei Special Economic Zone in Tanintharyi Region, including a deep‑sea port, a 660‑MW coal‑fired power plant and an oil refinery.
