Australia and the UK have renewed calls for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s immediate and unconditional release, after the junta claimed to have moved the 80‑year‑old democracy leader from prison to a “designated residence” to serve her sentence.

The Australian Embassy said it expects she will be allowed family contact, access to lawyers and medical care. Canberra reiterated its call for her release, the release of all unjustly detained prisoners, an end to violence, safe humanitarian access and inclusive dialogue.

UK Indo‑Pacific Minister Seema Malhotra described the announcement of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s move as “a welcome first step,” but added that “it must be a step on a path to her unconditional release.” The UK voiced concern over her health and demanded the release of all political prisoners.

The civilian leader has been held incommunicado since the February 2021 coup, serving nearly 2,000 days in detention on charges widely dismissed as politically motivated.
